Camping with your RV in Albuquerque
Camping with your RV in Albuquerque

Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and has a lot to offer RVers. From the State called “The Land of Enchantment” Albuquerque is full of it. The Southwestern Architecture, art, jewelry, traditions of the pueblos, casinos, and natural beauty of the Sandia Mountains all enchant the visitor.

The Old Town section of Albuquerque originated in 1706 and today offers, shops, galleries, restaurants, and museums. Native American can be found selling their wares on blankets set up on the sidewalks. The oldest church in Albuquerque can be found here and is named San Felipe De Neri which is open for visitors. The parking lot at Old Town Road and San Pasquale allows you to park your RV all day for $2.00!

The American Rattle Snake Museum is here in Albuquerque and houses the word’s largest collection of live rattlesnakes. The Turquoise Museum across the street from Old Town has wondrous display s and information about this state’s most popular mineral. Here you will learn that that 65% of the turquoise on the market is treated, 5% is not treated and the rest is imitation. (For more info on Turquoise check out our article on the subject -www.thesantafesite.com/Articles/truthonturquoise.)

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History features the (you guessed it) Art and History of the area. Here you can see Spanish period swords, as well as Mexican metalwork, Albuquerque homes and their furnishings in the Spanish Colonial and Mexican periods and more. The parking lot is accessible for large vehicles .The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science shows the evolution of the area. Here a visitor will learn New Mexico was once under water and that the city itself began as an island in the Rio Grande River. The National Atomic Museum is also here where you can learn about atomic energy. You can view a film about the Manhattan Project and the bombing of Hiroshima here as well.

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is very well done. Here you will learn of the traditions and legends of the New Mexico pueblos. Each of the 19 pueblos is represented in the center and each weekend they present Native American dances.

The Petroglyph National Monument is the world’s largest collection of accessible petroglyphs. These petrogyphs can be seen on a marked trail.

Sandia Crest is the top of Sandia Mountain at 10,678 feet and offers a spectacular view. The Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway is a great way to get there or you can drive up the backside of the mountain.

Some of the activities you can do in Albuquerque are skiing, biking and hot air ballooning. In October the city hosts the International Balloon Fiesta where hundreds of balloons and enthusiasts from all over the world gather to celebrate and compete in hot air ballooning.
